ECS Pre-K Classroom News Afternoon Class May 07,2004

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we talked about…Mothers! We worked very hard on some special projects, and the children hope you enjoy them! On Friday we went to a special show sponsored by the PTO…see the enclosed note for more information. Centers this week included: Look What I Can Do, Playdough, dollhouse, kitchen with babies, and Journals. We continue to watch the tadpoles grow bigger…still no sign of their tails...maybe next week??
On Tuesday and Thursday we were invited to join a Kindergarten gym class using the parachute. The children really enjoyed following the directions of the music, and using the very large parachute with the “big kids”. This was a good experience for everyone!
The rainbow the class worked so hard on is hanging in the hallway. We have gotten TONS of compliments, and Mrs. Lerman, a Kindergarten teacher, even brought the class stickers for all of their hard work! Way to go Pre-K!

Speech and Language
This week Matt and Molly attempted to catch a fly. The story provided us with an opportunity to discuss the difference between doing something intentionally and accidentally. We also talked about what you do when things happen that are not nice. The children continued to practice rapid naming, letters, sounds and numbers. They are also practicing signing the Alphabet song. During our Matt and Molly activity we work on yes/no questions, wh questions and sequencing 4 events. We worked on the /l/ sound. It is called a front tongue lifter. The children were able to rhyme with final /l/ words and think of words that start with /l/, with some help.

PT Group
This week in PT group the children used the parachute. Shaking it up and down quickly and slowly was lots of fun. They also sang “Ring Around the Rosie” and made a big bubble in the middle. The children had a lot of fun, while doing a good job following directions and staying in control of themselves! Good work everyone!

Looking Ahead
Insects, Community Helpers, and Tools/Machines will be the topics in May. In June we’ll be talking about summer and Father’s Day. Parents are always welcome to volunteer in the classroom. If you have a special project you would like to share with the class related to one of these topics, you are always welcome to come in!

Staff Appreciation Week!
I would like to take this opportunity to say a BIG thanks to Mrs. Camosci and Mrs. Dumas for all of their hard work in the classroom. As paraprofessionals, they sometimes get overlooked in the big picture. I know for certain that this Pre-K program would not be the success it is without their dedication! They go above and beyond every day, staying late, doing errands on their own time, and keeping my head on straight. Thanks a bunch Mrs. Dumas and Mrs. Camosci from Mrs. Maruschock!

Happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy the day!

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we talked about how to take care of our bodies, and keep our bodies healthy. We looked at pictures of self-care objects, and explained what we do with them…such as a comb/brush, toothbrush/toothpaste, soap, washcloth, and towel. Centers this week included: Dollhouse where we took care of the people, shelf toys to practice lacing, snapping, buttoning, playdough, Look what I can Do (writing in journals), creating a large rainbow mural, and observing tadpoles. The tadpoles have moved into a bigger home…a 10-gallon fish tank. They continue to grow bigger, and the children are trying to predict when they will grow their back legs.

Happy Birthday to Ben Acampora and Kate Pietraszek!
Have a great weekend…enjoy the weather!

PT Group
This week in PT group the children went out onto the wooden playscape outside. This was a great opportunity for the children to play “follow the leader” while climbing up tires, going through tunnels, and sliding down the slides. Everyone did great following directions, and many have requested we do this activity again soon! Hopefully with the nice weather upon us, we can make a few more visits to the playscape before the end of the school year!

Looking Ahead
Mother’s day, Insects, Community Helpers, and Tools/Machines will be the topics in May. Parents are always welcome to volunteer in the classroom. If you have a special project you would like to share with the class related to one of these topics, you are always welcome to come in!

CONGRATULATIONS!
We had 9 children in the PM class that participated successfully in the “TV TurnOff Week”. It was a great eye- opener for many of us, including Mrs. Maruschock, who realized how much we miss out on while watching TV! Hopefully it had a good impact on some of you, and we’ll watch a little (or a lot) less TV because of it! Thanks to Mrs. Camosci for purchasing the great prizes for ALL of the children for their effort!

Thanks..
Thanks to Mrs. Gallo for reading the Thomas the train book. We look forward to upcoming readers!
