September 28, 2006 Afternoon Edition

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned about Self-Care. We talked about taking care of our bodies by doing things like brushing our teeth, taking baths, blowing our noses, washing our hands, and using the bathroom. The students cut out pictures of the steps to washing our hands, and then sequenced these on a piece of paper. Centers: This week the students played a tooth counting game: the students rolled the die, and then put that number of teeth on the “mouth”. Shelf toys, wooden blocks, small chalkboards, and the hand-washing sequencing project were other centers open this week. Books: We read “Bath Time for Biscuit” and “Maisy Takes a Bath” this week. Vocabulary words: wash, bath, toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, washcloth, hairbrush, comb, and soap were our vocabulary words this week.

Physical Therapy Group
This week was lots of fun with Renee. The class went out on the wooden playscape and practiced climbing over and under, crawling through tunnels, walking up stairs, and sliding down slides. The students are already asking when we’ll be doing it again! Please have your child wear sneakers and pants (no dresses) on Wednesdays.

Important Notices
Please look here each week for important news and reminders pertaining to our class and/or the school. We have a student with a SEVERE NUT ALLERGY. ABSOLUTELY NO SNACKS CONTAINING NUT PRODUCTS ALLOWED. If your child comes in with a snack containing nut ingredients, we will give your child an alternate snack and send the nut snack home with your child.

~A BIG THANKS to Mrs. Torres and Michael for bringing in crickets, it is a huge help and Rocky and Tony have never been happier!
~ Thank you to Mrs. Rydzewski for offering to help with the class website. This will be a huge help!

A Look Ahead…
~In October we will talk about more Self-Care, as well as Body Parts, Fall and Apples.
~Parent conferences will be held November 13th and 15th. A sign-up sheet will be sent home in October for your preferred times.

Extra! Extra!
~To help reinforce what we have learned this week at school, a tooth brushing chart is being sent home with your child. Please help your child put a sticker each time he/she brushes his/her teeth and send it back to school when they are completed. These will be proudly displayed in the classroom!

~Do you prefer to communicate through email? Please send me an email and I will add you to my address book. knagy@cromwellct.org

September 21, 2006 Afternoon Edition

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we talked about our families. We learned that there are many different types of families, and we have many types right here in our own classroom. The children enjoyed sharing their family photos, and we look forward to displaying these in the classroom. During center time, the students had a chance to play in the kitchen center and shelf toys where there is a variety of activities such as shape sorters, stacking puzzles, and small manipulatives for building/putting together. Other centers included the block center, journals where the students drew a picture of themselves, and our project center. At the project center the students made paper versions of themselves, which we then glued their head pictures on to and these are on display on our hallway bulletin board. The students also played bingo game using student and staff pictures.

Physical Therapy Group
Renee was absent for this week’s session, so we used the time as an opportunity to go outside during this wonderful weather we have been having.

A Look Ahead…
During the month of September, our topics will be: Getting to Know Each Other, Our Families, and Self-Help skills. In October we will continue to talk about Self-care, as well as body parts, Fall and Apples.

Extra! Extra!
~HOORAY! Rocky and Tony are back! Who are Rocky and Tony? Our classroom pets…Fire-Bellied Toads, and they are hungry for crickets each week. We are looking for parent volunteers to sign up to get crickets at the pet store. If you are willing to help, please let us know ASAP. Rocky and Tony thank you from the bottom of their bellies!

~Snack: For snack, please only send in one snack for your child, as we only have time for your child to eat one snack at that time. Thanks for being so careful about sending in any items containing peanuts/nuts.

~Bathroom anyone? This week we’ve had many students needing to go to the bathroom soon after arriving at school, during our circle time. Could you please help us with this by having your child use the bathroom before he/she comes to school. We understand “you’ve gotta go when you’ve gotta go”, but it would be a more productive circle without all the interruptions. We appreciate your help with this.

~Does your child enjoy writing his/her name at home? If so, please be sure to have your child practice writing with one uppercase letter for the first letter, and then lowercase letters for the rest of the name. It is easier to teach it properly as they first begin this skill than it is to “re-teach” it the correct way later. Later in the year we will be sending home practice sheets for you to use at home.

September 14, 2006 Afternoon Edition

A Peek at the Week
This second week of school (first week for some) was one of exploring the classroom and getting to know each other. During our hello circle, the children greeted each other by singing a hello song. We worked on making eye contact with the person we are talking to and saying “Hi”. During center time, the students had a chance to play in the kitchen center, coloring center, and shelf toys where there is a variety of activities such as shape sorters, stacking puzzles, and small manipulatives for building/putting together. Another center was the sorting center, where the children sorted small transportation vehicles by their color or type of vehicle. The students also played a matching game using student and staff pictures. This is a great way to learn each other’s names.

Physical Therapy Group
We will be having a weekly Physical Therapy Gross Motor group facilitated by the school’s Physical Therapist, Renee Casner. The students call her Renee. This group is similar to a gym class, but geared for the Pre-K students and the specific developmental skills these children need to work on. Please have your child wear sneakers and pants (no dresses) on Wednesdays. This week the students worked on learning how to do jumping jacks, as well as how to skip, hop on one foot, jump, gallop, and crawl.

A BIG THANKS to all of the families for all of the great supplies we have received. The Velcro, tissues, purell, books, scissors and more will be put to great use. We appreciate your donations very much!

A Look Ahead…
Now that all of the students are settling in, we are sending home a class list for your information. On the back of this list are pictures of the students in the class. Please help your child learn his/her classmates’ names by reviewing this with him/her. During the month of September, our topics will be: Getting to Know Each Other, Our Families, and Self-Help skills.
