A Peek at the Week
This week we learned more about emotions. We played “pass the emotion” and practiced making the different facial expressions. We also took our pictures making the different emotions faces, and will be making an emotions book to send home.
Centers: This week was “children’s choice” for centers. They chose the train center, tent with books to read or a colorama game to play, paper fun making fun creations, goop with beads to pull out, a surprise project, and shelf toys.
Books: A Wocket in My Pocket, The Way I Feel. Vocabulary words: happy, sad, angry/mad, excited, surprised, bored, silly, disappointed, frustrated and scared were some of our vocab words this week.
Physical Therapy Group
The students had fun using the scooter boards in PT group with Renee this week.
Important Reminders
~ If your child is sick, he/she should be symptom free (vomit, fever and diarrhea) for 24 hours before returning to school. This will help to prevent the illnesses from being passed around! No one wants to be sick for the holidays.
~ Please send your child in with hat and mittens each day for outside playtime.
~ Sending your child with mittens instead of gloves is preferred…it easier for the students to put mittens on independently…and independence is the goal in preschool.
A Look Ahead…
~ In December we will learn about Positional/Place words, Food and Meals, Holidays, and Manners/Feelings.
~ In January we will learn about winter, action words, and dinosaurs.
~ The sign up to read dates have been confirmed and have been sent home. If you have a conflict with your assigned date, please let us know as soon as possible.
Extra! Extra!
~ Did you order Flip and Learn: Writing letters from Scholastic Book Clubs? If so, we have something that was missing from your order which Scholastic just mailed to us. Please let us know and we’ll get it to you ASAP.
~Mud Puddle anyone? We have misplaced the Mud Puddle book and kit. Can you please check at home for it? Thanks so much!
~Schoolwide reading program update: We have had some students complete their bronze and silver treasure maps! Congratulations for all their great reading! Please continue to read for “treasures” with your child. When your treasure map is complete, please send it back to school and your child will get a reading ribbon and his/her picture will be displayed in the front hallway.

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned about emotions. We looked at pictures of people showing different emotions, and practiced making those faces ourselves. We sang, “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, adding verses for if you’re angry, sad, tired, hungry. We made a happy and sad face “puppet” which we then used for a circle activity asking, “How would you feel if…?”
Centers: This week we made a happy/sad face puppet project, and completed some large floor puzzles. The floor puzzles were very challenging, but we felt really good after we worked hard and completed the puzzles! We also had an emotions game where the children had to look at the picture of the person, decide what emotion he/she was feeling, and put that on the chart in the appropriate spot. Shelf toys, train table, journals and coloring were other centers open this week.
Books: I was So Mad, How I Feel: Scared Vocabulary words: happy, sad, angry/mad, excited, surprised, bored, silly, and scared were some of our vocab words this week.
Physical Therapy Group
This week the students used the scooter boards to deliver packages to “houses”. The packages were colored beanbags, and houses were colored hoops lying on the floor. The children had to match the colors to deliver the packages to the correct house. They had to listen to Renee’s directions and bring a certain number or color back with them. It took a lot of attention to do this activity, which everyone did quite well!

A Peek at the Week
This week we started learning about farms. We learned that we get milk from a cow, a baby cow is called a calf, and cows like to eat grass. We also learned that a baby pig is a piglet, a female pig is a sow and a male pig is called a boar and that pigs like to eat corn. Centers: goop with scissors. Goop is similar to silly putty…it is made from white glue, water, food coloring, and borax soap. A farm animal memory matching game, and our project was a farm animal counting book project. Shelf toys and a barn with animals were centers this week also. Books: “My Cow” and “My Pig” were books we looked at this week. Vocabulary words: cow, calf, milk, pail, pig, sow, boar, and piglet.
Physical Therapy Group
This week the students pretended they were trees with leaves or the wind blowing the leaves. They used colored scarves and the wind “blew” the scarves off of the tree. Everyone had lots of fun doing this.
Important Reminders
~Please have your child wear sneakers and pants (no dresses) on Wednesdays.
~ We go outside to play every day, weather permitting. Please be sure to send your child to school with a jacket. It may be warm when your child comes in to school, but the temperature can change quickly.
~We have a student with a SEVERE NUT ALLERGY. ABSOLUTELY NO SNACKS CONTAINING NUT PRODUCTS ALLOWED.
A Look Ahead…
~In November we will talk about Farms, Spiders, Furniture and Utensils.
~Parent conferences will be held November 13th and 15th. See you then!
~No PM Pre-K on Nov 13 and 15 due to parent conferences.
Extra! Extra!
~Scholastic ClassroomsCare reading program update: WE DID IT! We have now read 200 books and still counting! GREAT JOB!
~Can you help? We are using lots of Velcro around the classroom these days, so we are again desperate for Velcro. If anyone would like to donate more, we would appreciate it.

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned more about autumn/fall and the many fun activities we can do in the fall time. We looked at many books about fall time, and looked for signs of fall outside. We looked at acorns, leaves, and even carrots that had been growing in our garden. We continued to learn about patterns and did a project involving making patterns with paper leaves, apples and pumpkins. Another project was tearing paper into little pieces and making “mosaic” type leaves. These are on display in the classroom.
Centers: patterning project, paper tearing project, shelf toys, journals, wooden blocks, coloring and a felt apple tree number activity: if there was a 3 on the tree, we had to put three apples on the tree.
Books: “Picking Apples and Pumpkins”, “Autumn Leaves”, and “Read Leaf, Yellow Leaf” were books we looked at this week.
Vocabulary words: fall, autumn, leaves, change, acorn, pattern, and repeat.
Physical Therapy Group
This week with Renee the children used balloons. They practiced tapping the balloons back and forth with their hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and heads. Everyone did very well listening to the directions and working their hardest to do this activity.
Important Reminders

~Thanks for the Velcro! Thanks to Niyati and Mom for donating the Velcro to the classroom…it is used for so many things every day! Thanks so much.
~We are participating in the Scholastic ClassroomsCare reading program. We are up to 87 books read so far! GREAT JOB! It’s lots of fun working toward 100 books together!
~Would you like to help us out from home? We need parents willing to cut/collate and put sticky Velcro on LOTS of little pictures. If you can help out, please let us know and we’ll send home the “homework” in your child’s backpack.
~Thanks for the great response to getting crickets for Rocky and Tony. A complete schedule will be sent home next week.
~A new member of our team: Miss Wendy. Miss Wendy is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant who will be working in the classroom from time to time.

Have a great weekend!
~Please have your child wear sneakers and pants (no dresses) on Wednesdays.
~ We go outside to play every day, weather permitting. Please be sure to send your child to school with a jacket. It may be warm when your child comes in to school, but the temperature can change quickly.
~We have a student with a SEVERE NUT ALLERGY. ABSOLUTELY NO SNACKS CONTAINING NUT PRODUCTS ALLOWED.
A Look Ahead…
~In October we will talk more about Fall and Apples. In November we’ll talk about Farms,
Furniture and Utensils.
~Parent conferences will be held November 13th and 15th.
~Reminder: no school on Nov 7 or Nov 10. Also, no PM Pre-K on Nov 13 and 15 due to parent conferences.
~We will be sending home a story to read at home, called “Mud Puddle”. We read this story last week and used props to retell the story. Watch for this in backpacks soon.

A Peek at the Week
This week we began discussing fall and the signs of fall. We introduced patterns using colored apples such as red green, red green, or red green yellow, red green yellow. We read the story “Silly Sally” where Sally walks backwards and upside down. All of the children practiced walking upside down (on their hands like wheelbarrow walking). We worked on making our own “silly” book, which will be sent home to share in the coming weeks.
Centers: Listening center with “Silly Sally” story, practicing snipping/cutting (on index card junk mail), cutting play dough and using “rookie sticks” (similar to chopsticks) to pick up the play dough and put it in containers. We also had pretend play grocery shopping with grocery lists to write, coupons to cut out, cash register and money to purchase groceries. Shelf toys, and a flannel board activity where the students sorted apples and made patterns were also centers this week.
Books: “Silly Sally” was our story this week. Vocabulary words: upside down, backwards, right side up, forward, fall, autumn, leaves, change. Rhyming words: pig/jig, dog/leapfrog, loon/tune, sheep/sleep, down/town.
Physical Therapy Group
This week with Renee the children used bean bags. They placed the beanbag on a body part, such as their heads, elbows, shoulders, and foot and then had to walk while trying not to drop the beanbag. They also put the beanbags on their backs and crawled. Please have your child wear sneakers and pants (no dresses) on Wednesdays.

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned more about our bodies. We had fun using frogs to hop on different parts of our bodies, which worked on body parts as well as preposition words such as on, under, behind.
Centers: We used play dough to make people, using shapes for the different body parts. “Balls” for the head, “oval” for the body, “rectangles” for the arms and legs, etc. We had a great baby center set up for the children with blankets, bottle, clothes, toys, diapers, etc. Everyone had a great time being Moms and Dads taking care of the babies. Shelf toys, coloring body part pictures, and Potato Head People were also centers this week. We also traced our hands in our journals this week. Books: We read “Mud Puddle” this week. It’s a great book involving body parts and prepositions. Vocabulary words: head, eyes, ears, mouth, nose, chin, arms, legs, hands, fingers, feet, toes, ankle, wrist, shoulders, chest, belly button and stomach/belly were our vocabulary words this week.

A Peek at the Week
This week we learned about Self-Care. We talked about taking care of our bodies by doing things like brushing our teeth, taking baths, blowing our noses, washing our hands, and using the bathroom. The students cut out pictures of the steps to washing our hands, and then sequenced these on a piece of paper. Centers: This week the students played a tooth counting game: the students rolled the die, and then put that number of teeth on the “mouth”. Shelf toys, wooden blocks, small chalkboards, and the hand-washing sequencing project were other centers open this week. Books: We read “Bath Time for Biscuit” and “Maisy Takes a Bath” this week. Vocabulary words: wash, bath, toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, washcloth, hairbrush, comb, and soap were our vocabulary words this week.
Physical Therapy Group
This week was lots of fun with Renee. The class went out on the wooden playscape and practiced climbing over and under, crawling through tunnels, walking up stairs, and sliding down slides. The students are already asking when we’ll be doing it again! Please have your child wear sneakers and pants (no dresses) on Wednesdays.

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we talked about our families. We learned that there are many different types of families, and we have many types right here in our own classroom. The children enjoyed sharing their family photos, and we look forward to displaying these in the classroom. During center time, the students had a chance to play in the kitchen center and shelf toys where there is a variety of activities such as shape sorters, stacking puzzles, and small manipulatives for building/putting together. Other centers included the block center, journals where the students drew a picture of themselves, and our project center. At the project center the students made paper versions of themselves, which we then glued their head pictures on to and these are on display on our hallway bulletin board. The students also played bingo game using student and staff pictures.

Renee was absent for this week’s session, so we used the time as an opportunity to go outside during this wonderful weather we have been having.
Important Notices
Please look here each week for important news and reminders pertaining to our class and/or the school. It is important you read this newsletter each week, as it will contain information pertinent to your child’s participation at school.
We have a student with a SEVERE NUT ALLERGY. ABSOLUTELY NO SNACKS CONTAINING NUT PRODUCTS ALLOWED. If your child comes in with a snack containing nut ingredients, we will give your child an alternate snack and send the nut snack home with your child.
A Look Ahead…
During the month of September, our topics will be: Getting to Know Each Other, Our Families, and Self-Help skills. In October we will continue to talk about Self-care, as well as body parts, Fall and Apples.
Extra! Extra!
~HOORAY! Rocky and Tony are back! Who are Rocky and Tony? Our classroom pets…Fire-Bellied Toads, and they are hungry for crickets each week. We are looking for parent volunteers to sign up to get crickets at the pet store. If you are willing to help, please let us know ASAP. Rocky and Tony thank you from the bottom of their bellies!
~Snack: For snack, please only send in one snack for your child, as we only have time for your child to eat one snack at that time. Thanks for being so careful about sending in any items containing peanuts/nuts.
~Bathroom anyone? This week we’ve had many students needing to go to the bathroom soon after arriving at school, during our circle time. Could you please help us with this by having your child use the bathroom before he/she comes to school. We understand “you’ve gotta go when you’ve gotta go”, but it would be a more productive circle without all the interruptions. We appreciate your help with this.
~Does your child enjoy writing his/her name at home? If so, please be sure to have your child practice writing with one uppercase letter for the first letter, and then lowercase letters for the rest of the name. It is easier to teach it properly as they first begin this skill than it is to “re-teach” it the correct way later. Later in the year we will be sending home practice sheets for you to use at home.

~This newsletter will be posted each week on the classroom’s website, which is currently “out of order”. Hopefully it will be up and running soon. To view this newsletter online, visit http://ecsprekam.blogspot.com/

September 14, 2006 Afternoon Edition
A Peek at the Week
This second week of school (first week for some) was one of exploring the classroom and getting to know each other. During our hello circle, the children greeted each other by singing a hello song. We worked on making eye contact with the person we are talking to and saying “Hi”. During center time, the students had a chance to play in the kitchen center, coloring center, and shelf toys where there is a variety of activities such as shape sorters, stacking puzzles, and small manipulatives for building/putting together. Another center was the sorting center, where the children sorted small transportation vehicles by their color or type of vehicle. The students also played a matching game using student and staff pictures. This is a great way to learn each other’s names.
Physical Therapy Group
We will be having a weekly Physical Therapy Gross Motor group facilitated by the school’s Physical Therapist, Renee Casner. The students call her Renee. This group is similar to a gym class, but geared for the Pre-K students and the specific developmental skills these children need to work on. Please have your child wear sneakers and pants (no dresses) on Wednesdays. This week the students worked on learning how to do jumping jacks, as well as how to skip, hop on one foot, jump, gallop, and crawl.
A BIG THANKS to all of the families for all of the great supplies we have received. The Velcro, tissues, purell, books, scissors and more will be put to great use. We appreciate your donations very much!
A Look Ahead…
Now that all of the students are settling in, we are sending home a class list for your information. On the back of this list are pictures of the students in the class. Please help your child learn his/her classmates’ names by reviewing this with him/her. During the month of September, our topics will be: Getting to Know Each Other, Our Families, and Self-Help skills.
