Afternoon Edition February 4, 2005
A Peek at the Week:
This week was more fun with DINOSAURS! The children were very excited about this topic, which got everyone talking. The vocabulary words discussed this week were amazing…including extinct, fossil, paleontologist, dinosaur tracks, and dinosaur bones, herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. We repeated many of the various centers that involved dinosaurs. With a “growing” dinosaur given to us by Mrs. Savinelli (AM class parent), we set up a bowl of water at the science center. We charted its current size, and will measure it again on Friday and next week to see its growth as it expands in the bowl of water.
Some other very cool additions to our dinosaur week: Mrs. Savinelli made a poster board of an actual Triceratops’s head. This is a great way to compare actual sizes of things. Also, Mrs. M, a substitute teacher at ECS, brought in an actual Dinosaur fossil that she came across some years ago. This was on display in the classroom on Thursday and Friday, and the children really enjoyed seeing the real fossil.
Centers this week included: Shelf toys with dinosaur puzzles, a wind up dinosaur and a puzzle track for it to go on, coloring a dinosaur book, which included a page about themselves: Talya-asaurus or Sam-asaurus for example. Another fun center was Lego’s with miniature dinosaurs where the children built museums or dinosaur lands. We added cars and trucks to this center, which was a big hit.
PT Group: None due to the puppet assembly on Weds.
We welcome a new friend to the PM class: On Monday a boy, Jon Kee will be joining the afternoon class. An updated class list will be sent home soon.
Being Healthy: A friendly reminder that in Pre-K we encourage healthy snack choices, and discourage unhealthy snack choices. We know it’s sometimes hard to stay on track with our food choices, and the children learn from our example. Educating them early about healthy food choices will hopefully lead to a lifestyle of healthy living!
A BIG THANKS: Thanks for the great response to our request for boxes of tissues. Our supply has been nicely replenished.
Looking Ahead: February topics include Self-Care and Dental Health, Valentine’s Day and Friendship. March we will be talking about Dr. Seuss and Clifford, along with Rainbow Fish and Friendship again. On Monday, Feb 14th we will be having a small Valentine’s Day party. Sticker labels with all of the children’s names will be sent home to help with making Valentine’s cards. More info will follow.
Thank you to Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Babbitt, and Colette’s grandmother for coming in to read to the class in recent weeks. The children really enjoy having guest readers visit each week! We look forward to future readers!
Enjoy the weekend! See you next week!
