A Peek at the Week
This week we talked about numbers and number concepts. We had the "number box" job this week. One student asks the students to guess what is in the box based on the sound the box makes when it is moved around. The student then reveals what is in the box and counts the items in the box.
Centers this week: Project-painting colorful peacocks for our bulletin board; coloring; pretend play-pretending to be grocery shopping and cashiers using cash registers. Dot painting-making number books using dot painters. Listening-Five Little Monkeys Wash the Car. Number centers-we had LOTS of number centers this week-matching the correct number of eggs in the nests, matching numbers on a number line, matching number raindrops to the correct number of umbrellas, matching domino numbers, sorting plastic numbers using rookie sticks, and using the props to do the story "Five Little Monkeys Swinging in a Tree, Teasing Mr. Crocodile you can’t catch me, no you can’t catch me. Along comes Mr. Crocodile quiet as can be and SNAP. Oh no, where is he?"
~Books we read: Five Little Monkeys Swinging In A Tree
~Vocabulary words: less, more, least, most, few, many, bigger, smaller.

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we learned more about community helpers. We also
began learning our "Opposite of the Week". This week we learned about heavy and light. Please reinforce these concepts at home during your everyday lives, pointing out things that are heavy and light, or asking your child to guess whether something in your home is heavy or light. We are also working on learning some geometric solids-including sphere, cube, cone and cylinder. It is fun to relate these shapes to real-life objects, such as an ice cream cone (cone), basketball (sphere), ice cube (cube) or a straw (cylinder).
Centers this week: Project-cutting out shapes, gluing them, then coloring the picture; Shelf toys- various fine motor/cognitive activities-including magnetic spheres and cubes; coloring; blocks with community helpers; spring playdough with glitter; paper fun-being creative with glue, scissors, paper, various shapes; pretend play-pretending to be a postal worker sorting, stamping and delivering mail.
~Books we read: Mortimer.
~Vocabulary words: firefighter, police officer, mail carrier, teacher, paramedic/ambulance driver, doctor.
Physical Therapy Group
In PT group the students practiced riding on scooter boards. Please remember sneakers and no dresses on Wednesdays.

A Peek at the Week
This week at school we learned more about the different types of transportation and how we travel in/on them and also began learning about community helpers.
Cromwell firefighter Chief Pendl visited us on Thursday and talked to us about fire safety and the job of a firefighter. We learned how to get out of a fire safely, including not stopping for toys, pets, or coats/shoes. We talked about dialing 9-1-1 for emergencies only, and we also had an opportunity to see all of the gear a firefighter uses to keep safe in a fire.
For a fun science activity, we did an experiment with a balloon taped to a straw on a string. We made predictions about what we thought might happen. The students helped countdown, then observed as the balloons traveled across the string. It was fun to race two balloons to see which one would go faster or travel further. (To try this fun activity at home, the instructions are on the back of this newsletter).
Centers this week: Project-various matching, coloring activities involving transportation; Shelf toys- various fine motor/cognitive activities; coloring transportation pictures; blocks with community helpers; puppet theater with community helpers; journals.
~Books we read: Firefighters.
~Vocabulary words: car, bus, train, airplane, helicopter, boat, bike, truck, hot air balloon, transportation, walk; firefighter, police officer, mail carrier, teacher, paramedic/ambulance driver, doctor.
Physical Therapy Group
In PT group the students played with playground balls, rolling them around their bodies, kicking and rolling them. Please remember sneakers and no dresses on Wednesdays.

~ This week at school we learned about the different types of transportation and how we travel in/on them.
Centers this week:
Project- Shelf toys-lacing transportation cards; patterns-making patterns using pictures of types of transportation; dot painting transportation pictures; coloring transportation pictures; train tracks-building a train track and riding the train on the tracks; pretend play-pretending to drive a fire truck or a school bus with props and pop-up fire truck/bus; sorting different types of transportation by color or type.
~Books we read: Plane Ride, Boat Ride, Car Ride, Getting There, and Freight Train.
~Vocabulary words: car, bus, train, airplane, helicopter, boat, bike, truck, hot air balloon, transportation, walk.
Physical Therapy Group
In PT group the students rode on scooter boards pretending to be delivery trucks. One student pushed while the other sat on the board, picking up materials to deliver. This was lots of fun for everyone.
Please remember sneakers and no dresses on Wednesdays.
Important Notices
+ The new entrance to the school building is open. It seems to be going smoothly now that we are in the swing of things. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Please remember you do still need to sign out on the clipboard in the office before picking up your child in the dismissal room.
+ Safety reminder-Please have your child wait calmly with you in the pick-up/drop off room. We have had a couple of children get hurt while running in that room.
+ Book orders will be sent home soon and will be due March 12.
+ Kindergarten registration/screening is occurring April 21 and April 22. If your child is going to Kindergarten next year, a notice was sent home along with this month’s school newsletter. If you have any questions regarding the registration/screening process, please let us know.
+ HOME ACTIVITY: To teach or reinforce early concepts-it would be great to play silly games with your child at home which involve the use of early concepts such as positions and size. Search for big/little/heavy/light/long/short objects around your home. Put a silly toy on, under, up top, on bottom, next to, behind, or in front of another toy. This is a fun way to work on these important early concepts.
